The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has welcomed the introduction of the Motor Vehicle Information Scheme (MVIS), which comes into effect today.
The MVIS, which requires motor vehicle manufacturers to share motor vehicle service and repair information with independent repairers, will level the playing field for the automotive repair sector and promote fair competition.
The operation of MVIS will bring Australia in line with the United States and Europe who operate similar schemes.
It is the ICA’s long standing position that, to ensure vehicle repairs are carried out to the required standard, repair information must be available to all repairers and not restricted to those repairers operating within authorised manufacturer and dealer networks.
Quote attributable to ICA CEO Andrew Hall:
As an industry that authorises around 1.4 million repairs annually, the vast majority of which are conducted by independent repairers, insurers are pleased to see the MVIS come into effect. It is critical that repairers have fair access to repair information to ensure a competitive repair sector.
We thank the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury Andrew Leigh and the Albanese Government for their ongoing support of the MVIS.
