The General Insurance Code of Practice was introduced in 1994 by the Insurance Council of Australia as a voluntary Code.
The Code is a 'living document' and has been reviewed and improved multiple times.
- The 2020 Code of Practice was originally published on 1 January 2020. It was revised on 1 July 2021 and again most recently on 5 October 2021 and 1 October 2023. The 1 October 2023 version is now in effect.
- Prior to the revised 2020 Code of Practice going live in 2021, the General Insurance Code of Practice 2014 was in effect.
- Throughout 2017-2018, a Code of Practice Review took place. Recommendations from the Final Report, were incorporated into the 2020 Code of Practice.
The Insurance Council of Australia is seeking feedback on the new draft General Insurance Code of Practice from 24 June until 21 July 2026.
The new draft Code has been rewritten to enhance consumer outcomes in a changing insurance and customer environment and has been developed following extensive consultation with consumer advocates, regulators, and general insurance providers.
