Insurance industry working for, and with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
The insurance industry recognises the necessity of understanding the views and needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. To support this, the Insurance Council of Australia stands up an Indigenous Engagement Working Group on a rolling basis.
The role of the Indigenous Engagement Working Group
The Working Group consults on matters relating to Indigenous peoples to drive better customer outcomes, support reconciliation actions, enhance community education and financial literacy, and increase industry understanding of customers experiencing vulnerability. It also works to strengthen awareness of specific cultural and heritage considerations relevant to the industry’s workforce, customers, and products. This includes applying strengths-based and culturally informed approaches that recognise the resilience, knowledge systems, and community strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples when shaping policies, customer support, and engagement practices.
Caring for Country and the Future
The Insurance Council of Australia acknowledges the vital role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in caring for Country, and the deep connection between people, land and water. Indigenous land and water management practices exemplify a holistic approach to sustainability and community wellbeing, recognising the interdependence between people, home, and the environment.
The Insurance Council values and supports approaches that strengthen this relationship and contribute to more resilient communities across Australia.
Indigenous Peoples’ Role in Advancing Extreme Weather Mitigation and Resilience
Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by extreme weather events, while holding the proven knowledge systems that precede, inform, and complement climate resilience and mitigation strategies widely employed today.
The Insurance Council is dedicated to strengthening our mission of building a resilient Australia by engaging with all levels of government, impacted communities and seeking Indigenous perspectives.
Reconciliation Action Plan
The Insurance Council has released its second Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Further to our inaugural Reflect RAP, our Innovate RAP sets tangible actions and timelines for implementing our strategy towards reconciliation.
The release of our Innovate RAP asserts a continued dedication to reconciliation. It reflects our belief in advancing understanding, respect and opportunities for Indigenous people in general insurance.
We recognise that reconciliation is a journey rather than a destination. It is about building relationships, respect, and trust between all communities. This is why we consider our RAP an integral component to a journey that encourages us to walk together in building a resilient Australia.
