On Monday 18 December 2023, the Insurance Council of Australia declared a 'significant event' for regions Far North Queensland impacted by severe weather and flooding over the week prior, associated with Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
As extreme weather conditions continued and as people returned to their properties, insurers were able to obtain a greater understanding of the insurance impact of this event. With claims numbers increasing and insurers deployed to the region, the ICA escalated its significant event declaration to an Insurance Catastrophe on 21 December 2023.
In the immediate aftermath of such severe weather that impacted Airports main roads and other infrastructure, one of the more significant challenges was safe access to the area and sourcing of temporary accommodation.
